SARASOTA COUNTY – Sarasota narcotics officers have made 45 felony drug arrests since July as part of “Operation Streetsweeper,” an ongoing effort to crack down on street-level marijuana and cocaine dealers operating primarily in north Sarasota (Newtown).

Lt. Pat Ledwith, who commands the Sarasota city’s two narcotics units, said during a short press conference Friday that the operation has focused on complaints from citizens, including one resident who sent a letter to Gov. Rick Scott complaining about drug activity in Sarasota neighborhoods, MORE FROM THIS SOURCE.

Newtown is a district that one man in Sarasota knows better than most. Bill Warner is a veteran private investigator who has called this area his patch for almost 20 years.  “It’s horrible,” Bill Warner says. “At any time of day, in Newtown, there are drug deals being done and guys on bikes acting as spotters on the look out for police. There is a lot of crime and it’s not a nice place to be. You don’t go there at night, period.
