As Ferguson Missouri violence flares fingers point to outsiders from California to New York City. Police have yet to release arrests records, leaving open the question of who is to blame for outbursts of late-night violence and looting. Some have made no efforts to hide their faces, others have charged into stores bare-chested, with shirts wrapped over their faces and baseball caps pulled over their brows. At times, the most violent element hide in alleys, emerging to throw rocks or bottles before disappearing again. Others are caught and taken into custody. Police have struggled to contain violence that erupted in Ferguson after a white police officer killed an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, 10 days ago. Civil rights leaders and police – at odds over much of what has occurred in this small, mostly black St. Louis suburb – agree on at least hypothesis: Many of the perpetrators are not local residents. “I’ve said that many a criminal element that have been coming through Ferguson are not from this area. Tonight, some of those arrested came from as far away as New York and California,” State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson told a news conference early on Tuesday.
On August 16 and 17, Zaki Baruti of the Universal African People’s Organization of St. Louis, MO will be appearing at the UHURU ‘Black is Back’ Coalition’s Annual Conference in Philadelphia to report straight from the front lines of Ferguson, MO, where Zaki Baruti has been organizing on the ground in response to the police assassination of 18-year-old Michael Brown on Saturday, August 9. In the aftermath of Brown’s murder, Ferguson, a suburb of St Louis, has seen military-style police repression and sustained black community demonstrations and uprisings. The government has issued a “no-fly zone” over Ferguson.
The slogan for the August BIB Conference is “Resist U.S. wars and occupations in the U.S. and abroad.” It is a slogan that represents the coalition’s belief that it is insufficient to simply call for peace as much of the traditional, white-led peace groups commonly do. This year’s Conference will hold a workshop entitled, “There is no peace, Africa and Africans are at war,” designed to explore the violence imposed on Africa and African people throughout the world.
