Video Surfaces of MTV ‘Siesta Key’ Star Alex Kompothecras Shooting Shark Off Side Of Boat & ‘Siesta Key’ Ratings Fall Flat With 674,000 Viewers Given All the Publicity. NY POST BRANDENTON, Fla. — Florida wildlife officials are investigating a video that appears to show an MTV reality star shooting a hammerhead shark off the side of a boat. The Bradenton Herald reports the video has been widely shared on social media and comes close on the heels of a separate viral video showing a shark being dragged. The newspaper says the man shooting the shark appears to be Alex Kompothecras of MTV’s “Siesta Key.” He was pictured previously wearing the same red “Make America Great Again” hat and clothes while posing with a dead hammerhead on the network’s Facebook page. Kompothecras apologized and deleted a video of a shark being shot from his social media accounts, telling People magazine he “would not make those decisions again.” It’s illegal to shoot sharks in Florida waters.

Live+same-day ratings have been revealed for the series premiere of “Siesta Key.” According to data from Showbuzz Daily, the new MTV reality series drew a 0.38 adults 18-49 rating and 674,000 overall viewers which is a fairly flat reception given all the publicity around the show. While not awful by contemporary cable standards (“Siesta Key” was Monday’s #13 cable original in adults 18-49), the numbers are certainly not spectacular. They do not provide optimism that “Siesta Key” will become MTV’s next pop culture phenomenon.

SIESTA KEY, Fla. (WFLA) – Premiere parties were cancelled. A Facebook page is calling for a boycott. The premiere of the reality show “Siesta Key” is getting negative publicity after activists connected one of the show’s stars to men in the infamous “shark dragging” video. Co-produced by well-known Sarasota chiropractor, Dr. Gary Kompothecras, and starring his son, Alex, Siesta Key follows young people living it up over a summer in the resort village. But, there are reports one of the young stars is buddies with the men behind the shark dragging video that came to light last week. His connection may have caused promoters to cancel a premier party at a Sarasota movie theater, and prompted a Facebook protest page calling for a boycott of the show. “I thought they should not be able to get away with being on TV to become more famous, to attract more followers to the social media pages,” said Ashley Midey, co-author of the Facebook page.
As far as TV Cable ratings go….A&E’s The Killing Season Episode Six “A Killer on the Road” Was One of Their Top Rated Shows in The 8 Part Series with 519,000 viewers and Featured Me, Sarasota private investigator Bill Warner. There was nowhere near the extensive advanced publicity for the A&E shows “The Killing Season” as there was for MTV’s ‘Siesta Key’. After private investigator Bill Warner’s alarming revelation that there exists long haul truckers moonlighting as serial killers terrorizing America’s interstate system, Josh and Rachel begin a cross-country journey to research these killers on wheels. While hitchhiking, the filmmakers encounter women who work truck stops, despairingly referred to as “lot lizards,” and hear first hand accounts of the dangers they experience everyday. As Josh and Rachel delve deeper, they uncover systemic failures in law enforcement allowing these mobile killers to run wild.
